First i should mention that it'll an english review for a french book because why not and it'll be short as the book was a soft and fresh read .
So "La cité écarlate" is a collection of 16 short novels . I should admit that i got bored and didn't like few of them and found others so intense and moving . But i've kind of felt at some moment that they were spiritually connected and i got the feeling that the main character is the same on all the novels .
The last novel , or the last chapter if i could call it , is of course my favorite . It was breath-taking . And i was like : " hell yeah it makes sense ".
Each novel with its different characters and places meant something or symbolized something in the main story . That made me think to re-read the novels i've got bored in , maybe i've missed some details .
As it was the first book of Sami Mokaddem , i could only say : "hats off" . I loved the language , it was easy to understand yet so beautifully structured . The book title was on the point as it was meaningful and the short novel " la cité écarlate " was my next favorite in the book after "De l'autre coté du miroir " . I should also mention that i've liked the cover and everything about the edition .
I really recommend people to start reading Tunisian authors books , there are alot of burried talents that we should give a chance and Sami Mokaddem is one of them .
Some few quotes i liked and i still remember :
" Parfois, quand les choses comme ça arrivent , mieux vaut les savourer en silence parce qu'un commentaire risquerait de tout gâcher "
" Ne t'accroche plus aux vestiges du passé . Parfois il faut savoir sacrifier ces petits objets pour l'avenir "
" Combien faut-il de silence pour réaliser à quel point l'un manquait à l'autre "
